Brooklyn Buildings — Getting Your Bins In

Brooklyn has more building variety than any other borough — brownstones, tenements, luxury condos, attached row houses, and everything in between. Here’s how delivery works across the most common building types.

Building Type Common Neighborhoods What to Expect at Delivery
Brownstone walk-up Park Slope, Bed-Stuy, Carroll Gardens, Crown Heights Bins delivered to stoop or lobby; no elevator needed; dolly helps on flat interior floors
Tenement walk-up Williamsburg, Bushwick, Greenpoint Delivery to lobby or ground-floor entrance; dolly for flat carries
High-rise with freight elevator DUMBO, Downtown Brooklyn, Williamsburg waterfront Book your building’s freight elevator window in advance; COI may be required — see section below
New-build condo Brooklyn Heights, Boerum Hill Check COI requirement with management 2 weeks before move; freight elevator typically 9AM–5PM weekdays
Attached row house Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst, Flatbush Street-level delivery; no special building requirements

High-Rise & Condo Buildings

Buildings That Require a Certificate of Insurance

Many newer buildings and luxury condos in DUMBO, Downtown Brooklyn, and the Williamsburg waterfront require a certificate of insurance (COI) naming the building’s management as an additional insured before any vendor makes a delivery. This COI typically comes from whoever is responsible for the move — your moving company, or you. Check with your building management at least 2 weeks before your move date to confirm requirements and coverage limits.

1

Check 2 weeks before your move
Contact your building manager or superintendent. Ask whether a COI is required, what coverage limits apply, and who should be named as the additional insured.
2

Get the COI from your moving company
If you’re hiring movers, they typically provide the COI. For a self-move, check whether your renters insurance policy covers a one-time move event, or ask your insurer about a temporary liability certificate.
3

Reserve your freight elevator window
Book the freight elevator time slot with your building management and share the confirmed window with us when you finalize your delivery date. We’ll schedule your bin drop-off to fit within it.
What to Avoid

Common Brooklyn Moving Mistakes to Avoid

1

Underordering for a Brooklyn Brownstone

Brownstones are deceptively large — a “2-bedroom” often spans 3 floors with a finished basement or garden level. If you’re between sizes, always size up. Returning a few empty bins is free.

2

Missing the Freight Elevator Window

DUMBO and Downtown Brooklyn buildings book freight elevators weeks in advance. Coordinate with your building management before booking your bin delivery — not after your bins are already confirmed.

3

Skipping the COI Check

Luxury condos and new-builds often require a COI from vendors before delivery. Call your building manager at least 2 weeks out. Don’t find out the morning of your move that you’re blocked.

4

Booking Too Late in September

September 1 is NYC’s traditional lease changeover — the busiest moving day of the year in Brooklyn. Bins book out weeks in advance. If your move date is September 1, book by mid-August at the latest.

5

Using Cardboard in Brooklyn Weather

Summer humidity and afternoon thunderstorms destroy cardboard left on a stoop or stacked in a walk-up hallway. Hard-sided reusable bins latch shut and hold their shape regardless of weather.

Don’t get caught without bins on move day.

Brooklyn bins book fast — especially in August and September.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you deliver to a Brooklyn brownstone or walk-up? +
Yes. We deliver to brownstones, tenements, walk-up apartments, and high-rises across all of Brooklyn. For walk-up buildings, bins are delivered to the lobby or building entrance. The included dolly helps on flat corridors and landings. No stair fees apply for any delivery or pickup.
Are there any stair fees for walk-up apartments? +
No. EazyCrates does not charge stair fees for delivery or pickup. Our pricing is flat — bins, dolly, delivery, and pickup at the listed rate, regardless of floor or building type. This is different from some competitors who charge per-flight surcharges.
Do DUMBO or Downtown Brooklyn buildings require a COI? +
Many do. Newer condos and luxury rentals in DUMBO, Downtown Brooklyn, and the Williamsburg waterfront commonly require a certificate of insurance from vendors. This COI typically comes from your moving company. For self-moves, check with your renters insurance provider. Contact your building management at least 2 weeks before your move to confirm requirements.
How many bins do I need for my Brooklyn apartment? +
A useful guide: studio or small 1BR → 15 bins; large 1BR → 25 bins; 2BR → 35 bins; 3BR → 50 bins; large brownstone or 3BR+ → 75–100 bins. Brooklyn apartments — especially brownstones — often have more storage than their listed bedroom count suggests. When in doubt, size up.
Which Brooklyn neighborhoods do you deliver to? +
We deliver across all of Kings County — from Williamsburg and DUMBO in the north to Bay Ridge and Sheepshead Bay in the south. See the full neighborhood list above. If you’re unsure whether your address is covered, contact us before booking.
What’s included in every Brooklyn bin set? +
Every set includes the bins, at least one dolly, delivery to your building entrance, and pickup when you’re done. There are no separate delivery charges and no stair fees. Extensions are available if your move takes longer than expected.
Can I extend my rental if the move takes longer? +
Yes. Contact us before your scheduled pickup date and we’ll extend the rental. Extensions are billed weekly at the same rate. We’ll send you a new pickup date confirmation once extended.
When should I book if my move is around September 1? +
Book 3–4 weeks in advance. September 1 is NYC’s traditional lease-changeover date and the busiest moving day of the year. Availability in late August and early September fills up fast. Don’t wait past mid-August for a September 1 move.
Is reusable bin rental cheaper than buying cardboard boxes? +
When you factor in tape, box cutters, time spent sourcing boxes, and disposal costs, reusable bin rental is competitive with cardboard — and eliminates all the waste and hassle. A dolly is included in every set, which alone saves significant time and effort on a Brooklyn move.
How do I handle a freight elevator booking with my building? +
Contact your building management or superintendent to reserve the freight elevator window — typically 9AM–5PM on weekdays, sometimes weekends by request. Share your confirmed window with us when you finalize your delivery date and we’ll schedule drop-off to fit within it.
